New Features and Upgrades 🆕

Display and Color Upgrade

First on the list is the display. The M3 MacBook’s display is now 20% brighter, increasing from 500 nits to 600 nits. This upgrade is a game-changer for those who work in bright ambient lights or under the sun.

The M3 MacBook also introduces a new space black color. A heads up though, this new color is more like a slightly darker shade of space gray.

M3 Chipset Performance

The game-changer is the M3 chipset. The M3 Pro, in particular, has shown impressive performance, matching, and at times surpassing, my M2 Max MacBook.

The M3 Pro has surprised me with its performance. It’s on par, if not noticeably faster, than my M2 Max MacBook.

Real-Life Scenarios

In real-life scenarios, the M3 Pro outperformed the M2 Max. For instance, exporting a large 14-minute 4K video on Final Cut Pro took about 5 minutes 30 seconds on the M2 Max, while it exported in just 4 minutes 45 seconds on the M3 Pro.

The M3 chip brings dynamic caching and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. This means the M3 Mac is capable of playing plenty of different games. However, the biggest hurdle for Apple to become a true gaming laptop is the selection of games.

Operating System 🖥️

I also had a chance to use the new OS, Sonoma, over the last month on the M3 Pro. It’s proved to be a great package and an operating system that helps take advantage of the extra power.

Choosing the Right M3 Variant 🤔

I still use my MacBook M2 for business tasks like emails, web browsing, and scripting. However, for more demanding tasks like video editing, photo editing, or having more than 10 tabs open, I reach for the larger and heavier MacBook Pro M3.
